WhatsApp Cloud API is the official API of the WhatsApp Business Platform, hosted on Meta’s infrastructure. It is the current way to send and receive business messages at scale: templates, the 24-hour window, webhooks, and verified numbers on a WABA. When people say “WhatsApp Business API,” they almost always mean this same platform (the older On-Premises API was retired by Meta). Cloud API is not a chatbot: it is the pipe. Sales decks still say “WhatsApp Business API.” Historically that covered On-Premises API (customer or BSP servers) and later Cloud API. Today the supported path for most new integrations is Cloud API. If a vendor says “Business API,” ask whether it is official Cloud API or an unofficial WhatsApp Web bridge. 42agents uses Cloud API only, via Meta Tech Provider.
You need a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) in Meta Business Manager, an eligible number, business verification when required, and a provider that registers the number (BSP or Tech Provider). With Embedded Signup the client authorizes in a few clicks. The number is no longer “app only”: it can send templates outside the 24-hour window, with Meta conversation fees separate from software.
Coexistence is a Cloud API capability: the same number stays on WhatsApp Business on the phone and on WhatsApp Web while the API sends and receives. That matters for SMBs and agencies: nobody wants to kill the usual chat just to automate. 42agents treats coexistence as the product default.
